Urban Funk set to perform on May 31st at Sullys of Chantilly 14513 Lee Jackson Memorial HWY, Chantilly Va. 20151.  8:00 PM to 1:30 AM. $ 10 Cover, Free Parking with Validation

Since their release of Heroes and Legends in 2010, Urban Funk has been performing in the Metropolitan region to critical acclaim. Showcasing the dance chart hits of the 70’s; this venerable period of music is the stepping stone for every performance.  Whether it is James Brown, Marvin Gaye, or WAR; the hits keep coming and dance floor is guaranteed to be filled. Wayne Sulc and Tommy Lepson front this group along with the funk fusion sound of a  rhythm section featuring Steve Long on Keys, Mike Davis on Bass, Gary Crockett on Drums, and Tim Cutrona on Percussion.

With a home base at Clydes of Chevy Chase, Urban Funk has also performed at The Smithsonian Museum of American Art, The Hamilton, Mason District Park, and various private functions.

Now scheduling for the summer season, expect to see Urban Funk at Sully’s of Chantilly, JV’s of Falls Church, Grist Mill Park in Alexandria and once again returning to Clydes of Chevy Chase where they will perform to a home town crowd of loyal fans.

Tim Cutrona

Percussion

 

Since the birth of Go Go, percussionist Tim Cutrona has showcased his musical talents in the Washington, DC area. Currently performing with Urban Funk, Tim has been a sideman for many local groups including Junior Cline and The Recliners, The Grapefruit Kings, and SaxMan & Friends he has also played at a number of local clubs, such as Blues Alley, The Hamilton,  and  The Cats Eye Pub. Before joining Urban Funk, Tim performed with Passion, an R&B group from Atlantic City  , venues included the Trop World Casino and The Wonder Bar Club. Tim’s professional career began in Europe where he performed for military personnel throughout Western Europe. Returning to the states in the early 1970’s, Tim performed with a number of local R&B bands, including his favorite, “The Six Sense Band and Show”.

Mike Davis Bassist

 

Bassist Mike Davis was raised outside of Chicago. His approach to bass was influenced initially by the gritty blues/rock oriented sounds of that area, which he brought out to Baltimore with him., Since relocating to Baltimore, Mike has been fortunate enough to play with some of the area’s best original-music bands, spanning the spectrum of metal, roots, R&B, and light jazz. Recording with these bands, Mike has appeared on more than a dozen releases, (Urban Funk, SaxMan & Friends, Naked Blue, Mutt, Common Bond, and others) some distributed internationally. Performances have featured numerous regional performances, tours of the entire East Coast and of Europe. These opportunities have included an opening spot for “Foreigner”, plus a featured spot on a national cable show. When not trying new approaches to music such as applying a fretless bass to metal music. Mike sometimes ventures out to sea to support ocean explorations conducted as part of his day gig. http://urbanfunkdc.com/band_bio

Steve Long Keyboards Steve Long, keyboardist with Urban Funk is a New England Conservatory trained musician who has also studied with the great big band leader, Bill Potts. Working in the Washington metropolitan area for the last 25 years, Steve has performed clubs, venues and stages with some of the most well known local bands and musicians. Composing in the funk fusion style, Steve penned many of Urban Funks tunes, and is the featured arranger on “Heroes And Legends”.

In perhaps the most significant partnership since launching a year ago in June 2010, ArtJamz participants will get a chance to paint while listening to live jazz in the Kogod Courtyard of the American Art Museum during three of the museum’s ongoing Thursday night “Take 5! Concerts.” The Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard designed by world-renowned architects at Foster + Partners in London In each of the three sessions, ArtJamz participants will get a chance to paint from 5PM to 8PM while taking in the live sounds of funk jazz bands. The June 16th session features live music from D.C.-based jazz band “Urban Funk;” the July 21st session features live jazz from “Funk Ark;” and The Kelly Bell Band headlines the August 18th session. It’s free to come to the Kogod Courtyard and listen to live jazz; however, for $40 participants can receive a 22x 28-sized canvas they get to keep, an easel, acrylic paints, brushes, art materials, the support of ArtJamz hosts and a chance to make art in one of America’s most iconic museums. Participants also receive 20% off drinks and food at the Courtyard CafĂ© during the session. “We are so thrilled about this partnership. It’s amazing to think that in just one year, we’ve gone from an experimental participatory art concept to hosting ArtJamz sessions within the walls of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Press Release 01-26-13 Saxman Wayne Sulc is nominated for URBAN CONTEMPORARY INSTRUMENTALIST by the Washington Area Music Association, “WAMA”. The 27th Annual Wammies are to be presented on Sunday February 17th at the State Theater in Falls Church Virgina at 8:00 PM. WAMA is an umbrella organization of Washington area musicians, concert promoters, lawyers, recording engineers, managers, graphic artists, and related businesses working together to address areas of common concern. http://www.wamadc.com/wama/ Wayne is a well known Washington D.C. Woodwind artist has played with many of Washington’s hottest bands and now leads his own “Urban Funk” . Featured in bands like Tommy Lepsons Soul Crackers and Junior Cline and The Recliners, he has also been seen with the likes of The Nighthawks, Naked Blue and Harry Traynham. Wayne has been called upon to record tracks with many local DMV musicians and has also been featured in several Band House Gigs Productions.
